) announced today that Dr. Gerald M. Exley is the recipient of the 2003 SWE Rodney D. Chipp Memorial Award for his outstanding record of hiring, promoting, and recognizing women in the Submarine Communications Division, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport and for fostering valuable career opportunities and advancement for women engineers and scientists.

Throughout his management career, Dr. Exley has achieved an outstanding record for hiring, promoting, and recognizing women in the field of submarine communications. His innate sense of fairness, coupled with his mentoring management style, has resulted in the advancement of women in a field that has been traditionally, and still is, dominated by men. During his dual-hatted tenure as NUWC's submarine communications program Software that manages the transmission of data between computers, typically via modem and the serial port. In 1988, he became a member of the adjunct faculty of Rensselear Polytechnic Institute at Hartford, where he continues to teach courses in networking and computer science. In 2001, Dr. Exley was promoted to senior scientific technical manager for submarine communications and became the NUWC submarine electromagnetic systems deputy department head for technology.

Chipp Award will be formally presented tonight at the Society of Women Engineers' National Conference Achievement Awards Banquet in Birmingham, Alabama Birmingham (pronounced [ˈbɝmɪŋˌhæm]) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County. . The National Conference, "Supporting the World Through Engineering," is being held in Birmingham, AL October 9 - 11.
