Dozens face federal drug charges after sting.

Byline: Rebecca Nolan The Register-Guard

Federal criminal complaints have been filed against 32 people arrested in Lane County last week for their suspected involvement in a sophisticated drug-trafficking network that imported drugs from Mexico and distributed them along the West Coast.

The complaints were filed in U.S. District Court in Eugene, where six people appeared Monday before District Court Judge Thomas Coffin for detention hearings.

Among those in court Monday was a man accused of possessing more than 15 pounds of heroin when investigators arrested him last week. Another man allegedly had about 2 pounds of heroin and 167 grams of methamphetamine at the time of his arrest. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Papagni told the court.

The arrests were the result of an eight-month investigation by the Drug Enforcement Agency and local police into an organization that imported and distributed heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine in Oregon, Washington and California, the DEA has said. Investigators estimated about 55 pounds of heroin and 15 pounds of meth were distributed each month in the southern Willamette Valley.
