QA My sister loves to read books. I want to buy her an e-book as a gift, but I'm confused about how they work. Do I need special software or hardware to read one? Where can I buy an e-book?

If you're interested in learning more about e-books, you're not alone. As more people discover what they have to offer, electronic books and documents are slowly inching their way into the mainstream.

An e-book is a book published in electronic form that can be downloaded to computers or handheld devices, such as PDAs, Pocket PCs, or smart phones. In order to read an e-book, you need to install an e-book reader software program.

Be sure to download one of these free e-reader programs before you download your e-book: Adobe Reader The software that displays and prints Adobe Acrobat documents (PDF files). Formerly known as Acrobat Reader, Adobe Reader is available free from the Adobe Web site (www.adobe.com) for Windows, Mac, OS/2 and various versions of Unix.  8 (www.adobe.com/products/reader), Microsoft Reader Microsoft Reader is a Microsoft program for reading of e-books. The current version for desktops is 2.6.1 (Build), copyright 2000-2007, and requires Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows XP Tablet Edition - UMPC only. Version 2.1.  (microsoft.com/reader), and E-Reader for Palm (ebooks.palm. com/product/browse/software).

The E-reader software allows you to scroll To continuously move forward, backward or sideways through the text and images on screen or within a window. Scrolling implies continuous and smooth movement, a line, character or pixel at a time, as if the data were on a paper scroll being rolled behind the screen.
