Manufactures include electrical and medical equipment, computers, boats, and adhesives. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 1995--After an extensive review of data archival providers, Downey Savings & Loan has selected PCI/Reports Archival from Protocorp International to reduce paper and microfiche Pronounced "micro-feesh." A 4x6" sheet of film that holds several hundred miniaturized document pages. See micrographics.  in its operations.

The institution currently produces approximately 1.5 million pages a month and plans to reduce that number by 50% with the Protocorp system.

Headquartered in Newport Beach, Calif., Downey Savings & Loan has an asset size of $5 billion. The bank has 52 branches located throughout California. Protocorp International specializes in second generation document imaging and data archival systems.

Last fall, Downey began an intensive program to migrate operations from paper to an optical disk environment. In addition to reducing its reliance on paper, the bank wanted to increase efficiency in all of its areas. "We felt it was absolutely necessary for our personnel to have immediate access to reports, as well as the power to manipulate those reports," commented John Dann, Vice President of Distributed Processing The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system. It started with the first minicomputers. Today, distributed processing is called "distributed computing." See also client/server.  for Downey. "PCI/Reports Archival not only provides us such productivity but also gives us substantial savings through total elimination of fiche Same as microfiche. ."

Downey selected PCI/Reports Archival in May of this year and implemented a pilot program into its check processing operations. In September and October, Downey rolled the product out to all corporate departments and will complete their branch installation by mid-November. Downey projects that the system will pay for itself in less than 12 months. Downey is now favorably considering PCI/File Folder to satisfy other corporate document imaging requirements.

"During our review of data archival vendors, we spoke with Protocorp customers," Dann continued. "Without question, each one praised the support it was getting from Protocorp. That kind of support is very important to us." Ken Long, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Protocorp International, commented on Downey's selection of PCI/Reports Archival: "We were impressed with the extensive review and analysis Downey went through during the vendor evaluation phase of the project. To have met their operational needs is something we are very proud of."

PCI/Reports Archival is a PC-based, client-server solution designed specifically for both mid- and large-size institutions. It eliminates the need for more expensive and complex versions of client-server technology involving RISC processors RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution. , minicomputers, mainframes or UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
. Its hierarchical data management uses high capacity, magnetic RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks - Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks ) optical storage and LANframe, which utilizes an array of PCs for compression and indexing of large volumes of data, in the proper mix to insure maximum performance. These features further separate PCI/Reports Archival from many other data archival products on the market.

PCI/File Folder, also a PC-based, client-server solution, is an integrated text and document imaging system. It incorporates an electronic filing structure designed to store, index and retrieve images and related data efficiently. This process eliminates time lost due to misfilings and the single access limitations of traditional paper-based systems. Document routing and workflow are also available.
