The venue - the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is an art museum located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The original building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence as part of his "main university quadrangle," now known as the Memorial Quadrangle.  - was just the first clue that Saturday's Eugene Boutique Wedding Show was a homegrown alternative to big, expo-style bridal shows.

There were free samples of organic wedding cake by The Sweet Life.

There was the premarital counseling special (two sessions, $60) by therapist Anita Cowlings.

There was the artist known as "Q" showing off unique wedding invitations from her Eugene-based Out of Hand Arts.

But the ultimate "alt" was captured in a photo album of wedding work by Passion Flower passion flower,

Floral designer Jewel Murphy pointed to one of the women.

"She came in one Saturday morning in a panic, saying, 'My friend's getting married at the Country Fair today and I said I'd do the flowers!' '

Saturday's show was organized by Marche catering director Jessica MacMurray Blaine, who yearned for something more unique than mega, mass-market wedding shows when she got married in 2003.

at those shows - doilies, doves and little plastic cake-toppers," she said. "That was so not my personality. I wanted my wedding to be creative, elegant and unpredictable!"

Eric Mustoe of Junction City and fiance Christina Gaul of Albany praised the Schnitzer event as a relaxing alternative to the big spring wedding show they recently attended in Portland.

," she said.

Bride-to-be Christa Posey found the show "less commercial, more elegant" than the bridal expo she visited in Reno.

She particularly enjoyed the Harlequin Beads display.

"I'm trying to put some personal touches on my wedding, to make it more sentimental, so I may make the necklaces and earrings for my bridesmaids," she said.

Later, she perused richly colored, recycled papers and accessories for making invitations at a table operated by the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. "The university bookstore - I didn't even think about them!" she told her mother, Tana Posey.

Custom items are not necessarily more expensive than mass-produced ones, many of the vendors emphasized.

Bess Nobel of Bellamissa Couture Gowns, for instance, creates custom wedding dresses for as little as $1,000.

"Say you ordered a ready-made gown for $800," she said. "By the time you add in the steaming and the alterations, it's going to be about the same."

Museum special events manager Miriam Jordan said she hopes the show also would showcase the Schnitzer as an affordable, elegant venue. "Our community rate is $200 an hour, and that includes the lobby, courtyard, cloakroom cloak·room
