Essential Concepts:

1. Students learn about Australia and the Barrier Reef.

2. Students learn how to create a mixed-media artwork.

Guiding Practice:

Children make their work appear to pop off the canvas in two easy steps by creating tropical mixed-media fish, and by creating a barrier reef as a background.

Making the Fish. Have children refer to photographs of tropical fish and Done's work. Students should draw a tropical fish, slightly larger than their hand, on one piece of construction paper. Cut it out, flip it over, and trace the shape of the fish onto the other piece of paper. Cut that shape out and paint the two sides. When the paint dries, trace the fish markings with heavy black crayon crayon, any drawing material available in stick form. The term includes charcoal, conte crayon, chalk, pastel, grease crayon, litho crayon, and children's wax colors. . Place the two pieces together and staple around the edges. Leave one side open and stuff the inside with crumpled crum·ple

scraps of paper to create a three-dimensional fish. Close with staples.

Making the Barrier Reef. Using the smaller piece of construction paper, paint a background of ocean creatures using tempera paint. Outline the drawing with black crayon and use other colors of crayon on top of the dried paint. Combine the painting and the tropical fish for a three-dimensional work.

Assessing Learning:

Display the painting and suspend the stuffed fish in front of it. Have students make comparisons between their own work and Done's.
