Austin joined Dow Jones in 1970 as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in Dallas. He subsequently served as a Page One special writer, news editor, Pittsburgh bureau chief, and deputy national news editor. In 1987 he was appointed director of corporate relations for Dow Jones and in 1989 was named director of circulation.
