General ad linage at the Journal declined 24.7% in April 2003 mainly because of war-related decreases in travel and other consumer advertising and reduced advertising by public utilities. Technology linage was up 4.0% in April, because of increases in advertising for personal computers, computer hardware and communications partially offset by declines in B2B e-commerce (Business to Business Electronic-COMMERCE) Refers to one business selling to another business via the Web. This was partially offset by increased retail and wholesale bank advertising. Classified/Other linage increased 14.2% in April, primarily from continued strong real estate and other advertising.

At Barron's, national advertising pages per issue decreased 34.3% in April on weaker financial advertising. Year-to-date linage at Barron's declined 27.3% on a per issue basis.

The Wall Street Journal Europe's per issue linage decreased 22.8% in April, with year-to-date total linage up 8.3%. The Asian Wall Street Journal's per issue linage decreased 13.3% in April and year-to-date total linage decreased 1.0%. Weakness in many of the larger general, technology and financial advertising categories, exacerbated by SARS fears and the Iraq war, were the primary factors for both the European and Asian Journals' advertising declines in April.

Ottaway Newspapers' same property advertising linage was down 0.9% because of a decline in classified advertising, partially offset by increases in display advertising and at non-daily publications. Year-to-date total linage at Ottaway Newspapers' decreased 0.2%.
