Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Names Richard J. Levine as Its New President.

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund (DJNF), founded by Wall Street Journal editors in 1958 to improve the quality of journalism education and to encourage young people to seek careers in journalism, announced that it recently named Richard J. Levine, 63, as its new president.

In this role, Mr. Levine will chair the fund's board of directors, which consists of members from both inside and outside Dow Jones & Company. He succeeds Byron E. Calame, who served briefly as president, and Albert R. Hunt, who held the position for more than decade.

Mr. Levine, a pioneer in electronic publishing, will continue to serve as vice president and executive editor of Dow Jones Newswires, the world's leading independent real-time business and financial news provider. In this position, he is responsible for the global news operations of Dow Jones' real-time business and financial newswires, which employ more than 850 journalists in 85 bureaus.

Dow Jones Newswires includes the Dow Jones News Service, the Capital Markets Report and Dow Jones' international newswires produced in partnership with the Associated Press.

DJNF is funded largely by Dow Jones and the Dow Jones Foundation, which contribute nearly $1 million annually to support its programs and operations, including newspaper internships and scholarships for college students; journalism workshops for minority high-school students; a national high-school journalism Teacher of the Year award program; support for inner-city high-school newspapers; career information; and DJNF's Web site.

Mr. Levine was vice president and managing editor of Dow Jones Newswires from 1995 to 2001. From 1992 to 1995, he served as vice president and managing editor of Dow Jones Information Services. From 1989 to 1992, he served as vice president and editorial director of Information Services, overseeing the group's domestic editorial operations, product development and business operations.

In 1987, Mr. Levine was promoted to vice president of the Information Services Group, with responsibility for guiding the commercial, technical and editorial operations of Dow Jones News/Retrieval and DowPhone. In 1980, he was named the Company's first editorial director of database publishing, after spending 14 years as a correspondent in the Washington bureau of the Journal, where his reporting was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Mr. Levine holds a bachelor's degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University, and a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, where he was named a Pulitzer Traveling Fellow.
