In the general ad category at the Journal, linage declined 1.2% in July 2003 mainly because of decreases in apparel and public utility advertising, which were mostly offset by increases in auto and travel advertising. In the Journal's technology category, linage was down 15.7% in July, as decreases in personal computer and B2B e-commerce (Business to Business Electronic-COMMERCE) Refers to one business selling to another business via the Web. The city became a national historic landmark in 1962.  and retail financial advertising which was partially offset by increased wholesale financial advertising. Classified/Other linage increased again in July, up 10.4%, primarily from continued strong real estate advertising and other advertising.

At Barron's, national advertising pages decreased 9.1% per issue in July on weaker financial advertising. Year-to-date linage at Barron's declined 21.3% on a per issue basis.

The Wall Street Journal Europe's linage increased 8.7% in July, with year-to-date total linage up 12.1%. Increases in technology and travel advertising were partially offset by declines in other general and financial advertising in the month of July. The Asian Wall Street Journal's linage increased 25.1% in July and year-to-date total linage increased 2.5%. Increases in general, technology and financial advertising contributed to the positive results in the month of July. Business in both Europe and Asia is being driven by the Journal's global advertising rate program.

Ottaway Newspapers' same property advertising linage was up 0.6% due to increases in classified advertising and at non-daily publications. Year-to-date total linage at Ottaway Newspapers was down 1.0% on a same property basis.
