Richard Levine, Vice President of Dow Jones Newswires comments, "We want to provide the Times Square audience with an informative, thought-provoking and entertaining collection of headlines to kick off the new millennium." Dow Jones Newswires has operated the Zipper since 1995 with its own news feeds as well as those from both the Associated Press and ESPN/SportsTicker.

News headlines from the years from 1000 through 1899 will begin scrolling at 2 on December 31st. Readers will see headlines about political and military developments, inventions, protests, natural disasters, world leaders and commerce. A second package of "millennium milestones" will follow capturing the key stories of every year from 1900 through 1999.

History of the Zipper

The Zipper has been flashing headlines at One Times Square since 1928. Dow Jones began operating the sign in 1995 under a lease that runs through 2006 with an option to renew through 2011. Since 1995, Dow Jones has provided a 24-hour mix of business and general news, time and weather updates, as well as sports news. In 1997, Dow Jones contracted with Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp. and Daktronics Inc. to include microprocessor technology to improve the clarity, speed, reliability and energy efficiency of the electronic billboard. The Zipper now uses more than 235,000 amber LED's, making it much more visible than the old 12,400-light-bulb display, which was difficult to read in bright sunlight.

The "millennium milestone" programming is the first "show" of its kind to air on the Zipper. Ann Marks, Vice President and Chief Corporate Marketing Officer of Dow Jones, is excited about the idea, "This is a perfect way for Dow Jones to contribute to the New Year's Eve Millennium celebration. We value the opportunity to share the event with millions of people around the globe."
