Double joy for Newell; Birmingham 2, Brighton 0 (Agg: 3-0).

Mike Newell's made up for lost time with a two-goal blast as Birmingham coasted into the Coca-Cola Cup second round.

Newell, who made a slow start following his move from Blackburn, has now scored three times in his last two games - and could easily have had a hat-trick against an indifferent Brighton side.

Birmingham went ahead in the 40th minute, the industrious Barry Horne carving out the opening from which Newell unleashed a 20-yard drive past Brighton keeper Nicky Rust.

The Horne-Newell partnership again proved fruitful in the 86th minute. Horne rounded Gary Hobson and laid the ball into the path of Newell, who fired a cross-shot past Rust.
