Double Subscriber Capacity With New Switching Equipment for the Nokia High Capacity GSM System.

NEW ORLEANS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 8, 1999--Nokia today introduced to the Americas market a series of high-capacity mobile switching products as part of the Nokia High Capacity GSM System.

The Nokia DX 200 "i-series" Mobile Switching Center A switching center is a node in a telecommunications Circuit switching network which is connected to either another switching center and/or to end user devices. Switching centers are aware of other centers and possible routes between them such that on demand a center can establish  (MSCi) more than doubles existing capacity and is capable of handling up to 400,000 subscribers. Nokia's MSCi is built to cope with the most demanding mobility management traffic generated in the most dense city networks. The DX 200 "i-series" products also deliver significant operational cost savings for carriers, reducing required site size by up to 60 percent and offering up to a 70 percent power savings, thanks to a new compact design.

The DX 200 "i-series" products offer the market's highest capacity. The DX200 "i-series" also includes high capacity products for the Home Location Register (HLR (Home Location Register) A database in a cellular system that contains all the subscribers within the provider's home service area. When a subscriber reaches a new service area, the data in the HLR is requested and transferred via SS7 to the VLR (Visitor Location ) capable of supporting 1.2 million subscribers.

"The new DX 200 "i-series" products work seamlessly with Nokia's existing DX 200 mobile switching equipment," said Jyrki Salo, Vice President, Nokia Telecommunications, Americas. "With Nokia's expanded range of complementary high-capacity products for urban and rural networks, plus transit switching, the DX 200 "i-series" will give GSM operators complete flexibility to optimize their growing networks."

The DX 200 "i-series" also includes a Compact MSCi, a two cabinet configuration offering a small footprint, which optimizes valuable floor space. The Compact MSCi supports up to 50,000 subscribers and is designed to support small markets and rural or remote switching sites switch·ing site
