Dortmund fail to beat Zidan's former club Mainz.

CAIRO: Mohamed Zidan came on as a second-half substitute as Borussia Dortmund were held to a goalless draw by his former club Mainz in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

The Egypt striker, who took part in the Pharaohs' 1-0 defeat to Algeria in Wednesday's World Cup playoff, started on the bench after returning from international duty.

He was introduced two minutes past the hour mark instead of German midfielder Markus Feulner as Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp sought to pile on pressure.

Zidan, who was playing against a team he excelled with in two spells, put in a fine display and could have broken the deadlock on two occasions.

He skipped past a challenger on the edge of the area on 71 minutes but his right-footed shot missed the target.

Another shot from a tight angle late in the game was blocked by Mainz keeper.

The 27-year-old, who scored one league goal so far this season, almost created a goal for Lucas Barrios when his flick found the Argentinean striker who failed to convert the ball from close range.

Dortmund, who extended their unbeaten run to six matches, lie ninth in the 18-team table with 18 points from 13 games.
