David Dornstein, the brother of the author of this book, died in the plane crash over Lockerbie Lockerbie (lŏk`ərbē), village (1991 pop. 3,892), Scotland, site of a 1988 airplane crash. On Dec. 21, 1988, a New York–bound Pan Am Boeing 747 exploded in flight as a result of a terrorist bomb and crashed in and around Lockerbie. , Scotland Scotland, political division of Great Britain (1991 pop. 4,957,000), 30,414 sq mi (78,772 sq km), comprising the northern portion of the island of Great Britain and many surrounding islands.  in 1988. The author also documents his own struggles to get out from under the shadow of his brother's death and life.
