In response to these advertisements from Issue 1 opponents, Doris Day has written a letter to Ohio newspaper editors urging voters to "admire these lovely birds rather than support their cruel destruction. I am very surprised by the tactics of the opposition. Their advertising campaign against Issue 1 has what I view as a `Washington political spin' -- because it is focused on issues related to medical research or the consumption of meat -- WHICH HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ISSUE."

Founded in 1987 and based in Washington, D.C., The Doris Day Animal League, a lobbying organization, recently sponsored California legislation signed into law which requires counseling as a condition of probation for any person convicted of animal cruelty.
