Doreen Bierlya moves from Element K Journals publisher to UCG's first chief marketing officer.

Like Dan Oswald, described in our last issue, Doreen Bierlya has risen fast and high in the few years she has worked in the newsletter and niche-marketing industry.

During six years at M. Lee Smith Publishers (coincidentally co·in·ci·den·tal

During four years as senior vice president and publisher of Element K in Rochester, N.Y., she managed the company's newsletter publishing division, developed and oversaw the corporate marketing departments for the online learning and courseware division, and finally took on full responsibility of the Journals division.

Now she has become UCG's highest level corporate marketing officer. As CMO CMO

The CMO position is one newly created in response to the company's tremendous growth, partner Nancy Becker said. "We recognize the need for a strong, central marketing champion, a CMO who promotes best practices and innovation and tackles strategic challenges that face all our businesses. Doreen is highly qualified to do this."

She is a board member of the Newsletter & Electronic Publishers Association and chairs its education and training committee. She also sits on the strategic planning committee of the Law Firm Marketing Association.

As with many newsletter executives, her college interests reveal little about her current career: Doreen holds a master's degree master's degree
