Donna Sternberg and Dancers.

Strong, agile, and fluid, Donna Sternberg and her ensemble presented a technically superb evening of eclectic modern pieces. The works ranged from an exploration of movement and its relationships with gravity to an evocative rendering of British Columbian art.

The concert's five pieces showcased Sternberg's choreography well and provided an apt frame for her dancers' abilities. The night's highlight came with the concert's second half, two newer pieces performed with a mature depth and cohesion that set them apart from Sternberg's earlier works.

Emily Carr (December 13, 1871 – March 2, 1945) was a Canadian artist and writer. She was born in Victoria, British Columbia, and moved to San Francisco in 1890 to study art after the death of her parents. : Paintings in Motion (1997) created a haunting A Haunting is a television series on Discovery Channel that, according to its website[1] chronicles the "terrifying true stories of the paranormal told by people who experienced real-life horror tales.  mood of symbolic gestures and emotions. The five parts traversed a terrain of movement from poignant to playful, the dancers spinning at times like autumn leaves flung about by a contrary wind. With this piece Sternberg successfully manipulated her movement vocabulary to envelop en·vel·op

The premiere of Emerging ended the evening on an abstract note. As the piece evolved, its four dancers progressed from anonymous alabaster alabaster, fine-grained, massive, translucent variety of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulfate. It is pure white or streaked with reddish brown. Alabaster, like all other forms of gypsum, forms by the evaporation of bedded deposits that are precipitated mainly from  images bound and intertwined by a length of fabric to individual women dressed in everyday street clothes.

versus freedom was the most ambitious of the evening, yet it took a slight second place to the handstands, splits, and plays on weight in the piece that tested the dancers' athleticism to the limit. They rose ably to the task, proving that the company's strength is twofold, resting on the dancers' impressive technique and Sternberg's diverse choreography.
