MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Bedford Resident, Naval Reserve Veteran, To Be Awarded College Medal

Founded in 1823 by fourteen Boston pharmacists, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy is the second oldest and the largest college of pharmacy in the United States. Two years after its founding, the College published the First American Pharmaceutical Library Catalogue.

, '55, RPh) will be the recipient of the College Medal at the Worcester Commencement ceremony on Friday, June 16.

MCPHS MCPHS Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences  President Charles F. Monahan Jr. cited Messina's strong leadership record and distinguished service to his country in announcing the honor. "Don has served both his alma mater and the United States proud for more than a half-century, and this is our way of officially recognizing hard work and dedication," Monahan said.

Messina, upon graduating from MCPHS, began a career with Eli Lilly & Co. that spanned 25 years, and has worked extensively in the areas of diabetes management and education. Messina is the former President of the New Hampshire Pharmacists' Association, and has also served in several key roles for the College, working with Alumni Association, Presidential Advisory Committee, College Corporation, and as an officer in the New Hampshire Alumni Chapter. He also played a central role in the establishment of the College's Manchester campus in 2002.

His previous honors include the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Alumni Achievement Award, Robin's Bowl of Hygeia Award, Phi Delta Chi Phi Delta Chi (ΦΔΧ) Pharmacy Fraternity was founded on 2 November, 1883 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor by 11 men, led by Dean Albert B. Prescott.  Alumni Achievement Award and Eli Lilly & Company Sales Leadership Award.

The MCPHS College Medal is awarded periodically to an alumnus or friend of the college who has made extraordinary contributions to both the institution and the communities it serves. The Worcester Commencement exercises will be held Friday, June 16 at 10AM at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Mass.
