Donald Bates. This diagram grew out of a search for the notation notation: see arithmetic and musical notation. How a system of numbers, phrases, words or quantities is written or expressed. Positional notation is the location and value of digits in a numbering system, such as the decimal or binary system. of new types of spatial ordering--in opposition to systems based on the grid, the axis, or geometric symmetries. It was produced by a purely graphic process, but with the task of implying a sense of organisation, in which relationships and an overlap of these arrangements could offer multiple formations. The generated lines, acting as a suggestive sug·ges·tive adj. 1. a. Tending to suggest; evocative: artifacts suggestive of an ancient society. b. matrix, were drawn and re-drawn numerous times, creating different affiliated conditions, which were then analysed and extended. This iterative it·er·a·tive adj. 1. Characterized by or involving repetition, recurrence, reiteration, or repetitiousness. 2. Grammar Frequentative. Noun 1. process offered a collection of spatial orderings, without direct recourse to assigned functions or programmatic pro·gram·mat·ic adj. 1. Of, relating to, or having a program. 2. Following an overall plan or schedule: a step-by-step, programmatic approach to problem solving. 3. determinations. Rather, the focus of the work was in creating a visual vocabulary of planometric conditions and the resultant spatial and organisational implications. The colours in the diagram form an aspect of coding for the various sectors, but are not fixed or absolute in this coding. The production of this diagram was not for an abstract purpose but was part of the initiating design process for the international competition for Federation Square in Melbourne (with Lab Architecture Studio/Peter Davidson). Therefore, there were already certain ambitions and design intents present in the work. Given a brief of multiple and diverse uses and functions for a large cultural, civic and commercial precinct A constable's or police district. A small geographical unit of government. An election district created for convenient localization of polling places. A county or municipal subdivision for casting and counting votes in elections. PRECINCT. , the diagram(s) also needed to offer an array of spatial readings, with links, intersections, shifted trajectories and uncertain edges or boundaries. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] This diagram (and its many variants) was used as a generator of most of the planometric and elevation strategies that emerged in the design for Federation Square. How much of the initial diagram remains as a readable remnant in the constructed building complex is not a measure of its value. Its value lies in the suggestive, implled and interpretive in·ter·pre·tive also in·ter·pre·ta·tive adj.
