Don't outlaw smacking.


In his letter to Viewpoints (February 6) Dave Weaving weaving, the art of forming a fabric by interlacing at right angles two or more sets of yarn or other material. It is one of the most ancient fundamental arts, as indicated by archaeological evidence.  supports his opinions on the smacking of children by comparing this country with Sweden.

He states that in Sweden, where smacking is outlawed, the crime rate is very low, whereas in Britain, where smacking is still carried out, the crime rate is increasingly high.

I cannot argue with facts except to ask Mr Weaver why there is such a high rate of crime in Britain today, when 40 years ago, when I was a schoolchild, the crimes we hear about now were non-existent.

Perhaps Mr Weaving has not had my experience of having a stone thrown at a bus in which he was travelling, or had his door kicked in and eggs thrown at his windows.
