The animal attacked Molli McKenna-Edmonds after another child accidentally freed it from a back garden.

The seven-year-old tried desperately to jump on to a small wall to escape the dog's jaws.

But she lost her balance and the dog attacked her as she fell and landed on the grass.

It managed to bite her once before an older child ran over and kicked it away.

She was left with a ring of teeth marks on her lower back.

Neighbours who saw the attack in Breckside Park, Anfield, took the sobbing child home to her mum Toni Edmonds, 31.

She had only seen Molli moments earlier when the child popped in to collect her skipping rope and she initially thought her daughter had fallen over.

She said: "Molli had only been out for an hour.

"There was quite a lot of blood so we took her straight to the hospital.

"I could not believe the state of it. It bruised straight away."

The dog's owners were out when the attack happened around 7pm on Saturday June 27.

Hotel worker Ms Edmonds believes a younger child unlocked the gate without realising it would free the dog, who was loose in the garden.

The mum-of-two, who also has a two-year-old son, Jack, said: "I don't have a problem with the people who own the dog. They have been round to see us and said they wanted to put the dog down.

"But I just want to warn people, especially in this hot weather when children are playing outside, to ensure their pets are kept very secure.

"We have a dog and I am really careful with him and the children. I really do not want this to happen to anyone else."
