Don't Blame the Internet: Daily Diary Research of Online Sex-Seeking and HIV/STI Risk Behaviors.Don't Blame the Internet: Daily Diary Research of Online Sex-Seeking and HIV/STI Risk Behaviors, Brian S. Mustanski, University of Illinois at Chicago This article is about the University of Illinois at Chicago. For other uses, see University of Illinois at Chicago (disambiguation). UIC participates in NCAA Division I Horizon League competition as the UIC Flames in several sports, most notably Basketball. I explored the association between internet sex-seeking and sexual risk-taking using both between-subject retrospective data and within-subject daily diary data. Men who have sex with men Men who have sex with men (MSM) is a term used mostly in the United States to classify men who engage in sex with other men, regardless of whether they self-identify as gay, bisexual, or heterosexual. (MSM MSM - Micronetics Standard MUMPS ; n = 113) from the U.S. were recruited through a variety of internet sites. Participants completed retrospective questionnaires on their history of using the internet to seek sexual partners and their history of engaging in sexual risk-taking behaviors. Participants also completed daily diaries for up to 30 days which asked about daily sexual behavior sexual behavior A person's sexual practices–ie, whether he/she engages in heterosexual or homosexual activity. See Sex life, Sexual life. , including if partners were met through the internet and what types of sexual contact occurred. Multilevel modeling was used to analyze the daily diary data. Between-person and within-person data produced opposite results. In the retrospective data, a history of online sex-seeking was associated with greater numbers of sexual partners in the last year, one-time sex partners, sex without condoms, and failure to discuss partners' sexual histories. In the daily diary data, unprotected anal intercourse Noun 1. anal intercourse - intercourse via the anus, committed by a man with a man or woman anal sex, buggery, sodomy sexual perversion, perversion - an aberrant sexual practice; was less likely to occur with partners met online relative to when partners were met by other means. This effect remained when unprotected anal intercourse was compared to protected anal intercourse or safer sex behaviors. These data suggest that finding sexual partners through the internet is more characteristic of men who engage in sexual risk-taking behaviors but not occasions of sexual risk taking. They also highlight the need for greater attention to individual differences in research on HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. and other STIs. |
