Don't cut down the trees. (Letters)."Solving Hazy Mysteries" (SN: 12/7/02, p. 360) shows hazy pictures from Great Smoky Mountains National Park Great Smoky Mountains National Park National preserve, eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, U.S. It is 20 mi (32 km) wide and extends southwest for 54 mi (87 km) from the Pigeon River to the Little Tennessee River. Established in 1934 to preserve the U.S. and says the cause of the haze is "volatile organic compounds released by trees." I'm the airquality specialist in the park, and I know that 60 percent of the particle mass in the air is sulfate sulfate, chemical compound containing the sulfate (SO4) radical. Sulfates are salts or esters of sulfuric acid, H2SO4, formed by replacing one or both of the hydrogens with a metal (e.g., sodium) or a radical (e.g., ammonium or ethyl). from power plants, not trees, and 80 percent of the haze is from sulfate, not trees. This article is misleading, and pictures of the park should not have been shown, especially if none of the work related to this story was done in the park.
