In Christianity, a sacrament is commonly defined as having been instituted by Jesus and consisting of a visible sign of invisible grace.  of Confession confession, in law, the formal admission of criminal guilt, usually obtained in the course of examination by the police or prosecutor or at trial. For a confession to be admissible as evidence against an accused individual, it generally must have been procured  as the means to have his or her sins forgiven.

Confession is the sacrament of God's forgiveness for which Christ died on the cross. General absolution is not a sacrament and can never wash away the sins of anyone. It was never contemplated as a means for sins to be forgiven, it is never sacramental sacramental, in the Roman Catholic Church, aid to devotion that is not a sacrament. Sacramentals are commonly divided into six classes: prayer, anointing, eating, confession, giving, and blessings.  in nature, and it never confers the graces that only Confession can give.
