Rembert tells a bit of his history as a Southern African-American during the early years of the civil rights movement. Much of the time was spent in a series of lock-ups. After his release and move up North, he finds encouragment to develop his interest in tooling leather into pictures. Many of the works are displayed on the pages, some images detailing pieces of a larger work, illustrating his narrative. Although unschooled, Rembert's images are solidly conceived with characteristics similar to those found in Jacob Jacob (jā`kəb), in the Bible, ancestor of the Hebrews, the younger of Isaac and Rebecca's twin sons; the older was Esau. In exchange for a bowl of lentil soup, Jacob obtained Esau's birthright and, with his mother's help, received the blessing  Lawrence's work. These are story pictures with specific details from his life, but they also are designed with a strong sense of aesthetic patterns. Middle school students will learn about American history as well as about an artist probably unfamiliar to them.
