Dolphin, in collaboration with Ping, decided to install the units for two reasons, according to Pete Poleon, Dolphin's general manager. First, Ping wants to protect its intellectual property. Second, the company wants to maintain a domestic source for castings that had previously been produced only in China.

Dolphin, a unique producer of production investment cast golf clubs on American soil, has in the past several years ramped up its production of steel irons and putters, as well as some aluminum and bronze production. It now produces 98% of Ping's irons and putters. However, the golf company maintains no capacity for titanium production in the U.S.

According to Poleon, the installation of the vacuum units also will enhance the company's standing with its commercial customers.

"We see a lot of opportunities in commercial superalloy castings," Poleon said.
