Dollar mostly down, gold up in EuropeThe U.S. dollar fell against most major currencies in European trading Monday. Gold rose. The euro traded at $1.3773, down from $1.3789 late Friday. The euro hit a record high of $1.3813 on Friday and traded as high as $1.3803 on Monday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.3781. Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Friday, included 121.96 Japanese yen, down from 122.03; 1.2029 Swiss francs, down from 1.2022; and 1.0424 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0476. The British pound traded at $2.0369, up from $2.0336. In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 121.96 yen and 1.2022 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $2.0372. Gold traded in London at $665.60 per troy ounce, up from $665.30 late Friday. In Zurich, gold traded at $663.05 per troy ounce, up from $662.60. Gold fell 20 cents in Hong Kong to $667.45. Silver opened in London at $12.95 per troy ounce, unchanged.
