Dollar mixed, gold lower in Europe


The U.S. dollar was mixed against other major currencies in late European trading Monday. Gold prices fell.

The euro traded at $1.3457, down from $1.3466 late Friday in New York. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.3447.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Friday, included 123.71 Japanese yen, down from 123.87; 1.2287 Swiss francs, unchanged; and 1.0696 Canadian dollars, up from 1.0690.

The British pound briefly topped the $2 mark before falling back to $1.9972, down from $1.9994 on Friday.

In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 123.90 yen and 1.2304 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $1.9963.

Gold closed in London at $650.50, down from $652.60 late Friday. In Zurich, gold closed at $648.90 per troy ounce, down from $650.60. Gold fell 80 cents in Hong Kong to close at $651.65.

Silver closed in London at $12.87 bid per troy ounce, down from $13.10.
