Dollar Diplomacy.

IF MONEY TALKS, LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES CERTAINLY HAVE been chaffing up Wall Street and the Washington Beltway, spending millions to peddle coffee, to lobby on oil legislation or even just to gain a little support within the World Trade Organization.

A review of foreign entities that reported their U.S. activities, as required, shows that Colombia Colombia (kəlŭm`bēə, Span. kōlōm`byä), officially Republic of Colombia, republic (2005 est. pop. 42,954,000), 439,735 sq mi (1,138,914 sq km), NW South America. Bogotá is the capital and largest city.'s coffee federation won the prize for effort, doling out nearly $18 million in its lobbying lobbying, practice and profession of influencing governmental decisions, carried out by agents who present the concerns of special interests to legislators and administrators. The term originated in the United States of the 1830s, when representatives of interest groups tended to congregate in the lobbies of Congress and state legislatures. It is now used in a broader sense to include attempts to influence any governmental actions. and advertising efforts in 1999, the most recent year for which figures are available. Even cash-strapped Haiti Haiti (hā`tē), Fr. Haïti (äētē`), officially Republic of Haiti, republic (2005 est. pop. joined the bandwagon, spending nearly half a million dollars in a bid to get the U.S. city of Philadelphia, which shipped its incinerated trash to the Caribbean island, to take the ashes back where they came from.
