Dolby acquires Burbank firm in move toward video. (Media & Technology).

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (Dolby Labs) (NYSE: DLB) is a USA-based company specializing in audio compression and reproduction.
 has acquired DemoGraFX, a Burbank-based effects company, as part of the company's efforts to move into digital video processing Video processing techniques are used in video codecs, video players and other devices. For example—commonly only design and video processing is different in TV sets of different manufactures. .

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dolby (Dolby Laboratories, Wiltshire, England, www.dolby.com) An audio research laboratory founded in 1965 in London by American engineer and physicist Ray Dolby. The company introduced its noise reduction system for tape recording in that same year, which became known as Dolby A and has been , long known for its state-of-the-art sound system technology, says it plans to expand the use of its signal processing See DSP.  systems into the digital video industry.

"Dolby's strategy is to deliver key signal processing solutions for entertainment applications," said Bill Jasper president of Dolby Laboratories.

The move into digital video technology is Dolby's first major effort away from the sound industry, by taking over a leading innovator in the digital video processing industry.

DemoGraFX has a large portfolio of patents dealing with digital image signal processing, image compression Noun 1. image compression - the compression of graphics for storage or transmission
compression - encoding information while reducing the bandwidth or bits required
, video noise reduction and image coding.

San Francisco-based Dolby has about 600 patents and 720 trademarks and its sound systems are used in 36,000 movie screens worldwide.
