The United Nations system spends $3.7 billion a year on goods and services In economics, economic output is divided into physical goods and intangible services. Consumption of goods and services is assumed to produce utility (unless the "good" is a "bad"). It is often used when referring to a Goods and Services Tax.  to carry out its many programmes throughout the world. Of this, 51.1 billion is spent to support United Nations peacekeeping operations around the globe. The remaining $2.6 billion is distributed among humanitarian assistance missions and economic development projects. The United Nations procurement system is decentralized--30 agencies worldwide carry out their own purchases and contracting, and each of them has additional field offices in Africa, Asia, Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies.  and the Middle East.

The United Nation's largest supplier is the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , with 18 per cent of the Organization's total procurement worldwide--some $658 million.

Each year, the United Nations spends several hundred million dollars on food, vehicles, computers, logistics services, and air and sea freight services. Other major items include tents, trucks, audiovisual equipment, relief goods, helmets, communication equipment, and even satellites. The United Nations is the largest buyer of vaccines in the world.

In 1995, the United Nations system, comprised of 30 agencies and hundreds of field offices around the world, procured goods and services worth approximately $4 billion. It is one of the largest sources of multilateral procurement in the world.

The 10 countries with the largest concentration of United Nations procurement activity in 1995 were: United States, $658 million (17.8 per cent); Italy, $448 million (12.1 per cent); United Kingdom, $171 million (4.6 per cent); France, $137 million (3.7 per cent); Germany, $134 million (3.6 per cent); Switzerland, $ 112 million (3.0 per cent); Japan, $ 111 million (3.0 per cent); Canada, $104 million (2.8 per cent); Belgium, $92 million (2.5 per cent); and Denmark, $83 million (2.2 per cent).

United Nations field offices in Croatia and Angola purchased goods and services worth $185 million and $89 million, respectively, demonstrating the need for vendors to visit United Nations procurement offices all over the world.

The Procurement and Transportation Division at United Nations Headquarters makes purchases for the Headquarters and for UN peacekeeping operations around the world-$399 million in 1995. The United States share of that amount totalled $189 million, or 47 per cent of those orders.

The United Nations top ten purchases in 1995 were: logistics services, $332 million; food (including rations), $277 million; drugs and medical equipment, $184 million; sea and air freight air freight nflete m por avión

, $172 million; vehicles, $148 million; vaccines, $121 million; computers and software, $72 million; contraceptives, $56 million; industrial equipment, $45 million; and communication equipment,$27 million.

In 1995, the United Nations bought $1.1 billion worth of goods and services for 16 peacekeeping missions around the world. The World Food Programme is the single largest purchasing agency in the United Nations system. Each year, the United Nations Children's Fund United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), an affiliated agency of the United Nations. It was established in 1946 as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.  buys half of the world production of vaccines. The United Nations Population Fund The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) began funding population programs in 1969. It was renamed the United Nations Population Fund in 1987, but kept its original abbreviation.  is the largest purchaser of contraceptives in the world.

The United Nations Development Programme provides $5 billion in resources to 175 countries every year. The United Nations economic agencies and programmes provide more development assistance than the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund together.

A score of United Nations agencies assist poor nations in their efforts to develop their economies. In 1995, these agencies spent $800 million on industrial goods industrial goods nplbienes mpl de producción  and consulting services in the field of development.
