It gave its first performance in 1918 under Nikolai Sokoloff, who was conductor until 1933. However, his First Symphony, written when he was only 23, certainly establishes him as a composer to be reckoned with, and both Botstein and Telarc deserve warm appreciation for making this fine but nearly forgotten music available. The work is reminiscent of Bruckner, particularly in the opening movement, but is quite capable of standing on its own merits. If you are a fan of the orchestral music of Bruckner, Wagner, or Elgar, you really ought to give this fine Telarc recording a try. |
