Doggie diet.


Following the low-carb diet craze, the pet-food company Pedigree has introduced an Atkins-style dog food. With more than 30 percent of U.S. dogs severely overweight, Pedigree hopes the new diet will shrink canines' bulging bulge

How could food low in carbohydrates (chemical compounds, such as sugar, used for energy) help Spot shed pounds?

A dog, like a human, gets energy by first burning carbohydrates, which are easy to break down. After using all the carbs, the dog's body burns other nutrients--like stored fat. That means if Spot eats fewer carbs, its body will turn to stored fat faster. The result: weight loss.

But for the diet to work, owners must follow Pedigree's suggested serving sizes and not overfeed o·ver·feed
