Document thought to be George Washington's final order to be sold at New York City auction.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1996--A rare George Washington document penned and signed just 17 days before his death is to be offered at auction on Thursday, March 21, by the New York New York, state, United States

 order, dated Nov. 26, 1799, was for the purchase of items for the comfort and good health of his personal slaves," comments Diana E. Herzog, president of R.M. Smythe and a leading authority on presidential signatures. "Documents demonstrating Washington's humane treatment of his slaves are particularly interesting."

The one-page document, completely written in George Washington's hand, places the order for goods "to be sent for by Mr. John Gill John Gill may refer to:

The Washington document, which is expected to sell for upwards of $7,500, is part of a major R.M. Smythe autograph auction which will include letters and documents signed by every U.S. President from George Washington to Bill Clinton, as well as many items signed by First Ladies. The offerings include:

The privately printed, lavishly illustrated 1793 volume, Memoir of a Map of Hindoostan, was received by Washington in 1795 while he was president, signed, and deposited in his library at Mount Vernon. When Washington died, an inventory of the estate appraised the book at $8, a huge sum at the time. Estimated today at $25,000 - up.

- A book containing the scarce signature of Martha Washington, also a gift to the President, that arrived at Mount Vernon after his death and, in an unusual gesture, was signed by the former First Lady upon receipt in 1800. Estimated at $12,500 - up.

- An Abraham Lincoln-signed letter dated Aug. 29, 1860, responding to a supporter after his becoming the Republican nominee for the presidency. Estimated at $16,500 - up.
