Document management industry strives for interchange standards; interoperability debate takes center stage at Documation '95.LONG BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 1995--Representatives from each of the major interoperability consortia will share a stage in ``Document Interoperability Standards Forum,'' one of several general sessions focusing on key document management issues at the Documation '95 Conference & Expo. This session marks the first time ever these groups have come together to speak publicly about this issue. The second annual Documation '95 runs March 7-9 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach. The event is sponsored by Graphic Communications Association and Publishing Technology Management (PTM PTM Post-Translational Modifications PTM Porsche Traction Management PTM Point-To-Multipoint PTM Please Tell Me PTM Packet Transfer Mode PTM Pulse-Time Modulation PTM Portugal The Man (band) PTM Predictive Technology Model ). The debate over interoperability standards has gained momentum in the past year as companies building repositories of documents and document data have an increasing need for applications to have the ability to access information across platforms and make intelligent re-use of it. To fulfill this requirement, industry consortia have been created to facilitate application interoperability. The session will pull together leaders from each of the existing and proposed interoperability standards, ODMA (1) (Open Document Management API) A programming interface used to allow client programs to communicate with document management systems on a server. , Document Enabled Netware, SGML SGML in full Standard Generalized Markup Language Markup language for organizing and tagging elements of a document, including headings, paragraphs, tables, and graphics. , CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global , OpenDoc and Shamrock shamrock, a plant with leaves composed of three leaflets. According to legend it was used by St. Patrick in explaining the doctrine of the Trinity; it is now used as the emblem of Ireland. An artificial or real shamrock leaf is customarily worn on St. Patrick's Day. , the industry consortium launched at Documation's inaugural event last year. Speakers include Ira Scharfglass of XSoft, Chris Stone of Object Management Group, Alvin Tedjamulia of Novell, Mary Laplante of SGML Open, Frank Dawson of IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) Software Solutions for Shamrock and Neil Kapin of Component Integration Labs. Each speaker will explain exactly what his or her solution offers, what he or she hopes to achieve and where he or she is willing to compromise. The session will be moderated by Conference Chair and Editorial Director of The Gilbane Report. ``Trade papers and industry experts agree that this is going to be a pivotal year for the document management industry,'' explained Frank Gilbane. ``I'm convinced one area where we'll see some significant progress made is with interoperability. With this panel, we have a golden opportunity to find common ground and educate IS managers on how interoperability standards do, or should, interoperate.'' In addition to the three-day conference program, Documation '95 also offers an expo where the latest in all aspects of document management technology and solutions are presented by exhibiting companies, as well as cooperative multi-vendor environments, hands-on demonstration areas and a series of tutorials.
