Document Sciences Announces VPS Enhanced PostScript Emitter Produces Dramatic Color Printing Speed Improvements.

Business Editors

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 5, 2001

Document Sciences Corporation (Nasdaq:DOCX) released its VPS-Enhanced Postscript Emitter this week, after extensive beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the  indicated the Emitter dramatically improves both RIP time and file size of print jobs for Xerox DocuColor printers.

"Xerox of Norway, one of our beta sites for the VPS-Enhanced Emitter, realized print speed improvements of over 300%," explained Lisa Sutrick, Director of Product Planning Product Planning is the ongoing process of identifying and articulating market requirements that define a product’s feature set.  feature reduced the size of the file sent to the printer by over 90%. The RIP processing time on a 680 page document was reduced from one hour and 47 minutes to just 8 minutes and 24 seconds. Our other beta sites achieved similar results."

The VPS-Enhanced Postscript Emitter reduces RIP processing time by storing repeated document components such as photographs, logos, graphics and text on a CreoScitex Spire color print server, and processing them in advance. Instead of sending information to the printer again and again for each printed copy, data is downloaded and processed just once. This process helps digital color printers achieve full rated speed when printing variable-data documents such as full-color account statements with customized charts and graphs or coupons.

Document Sciences is among the first to implement VPS, a specification developed by CreoScitex, whose color print servers drive high-volume Xerox Color Printers. Document Sciences' industry-leading CompuSet(R) composition engine and Emitters are widely used to automate production of high volume variable-data documents on Xerox, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  and other digital printing systems.
