Doctors are being warned not to respond to sexual advances from patients via social networking sites such as Facebook.

The MDU warns that doctors should not respond, even if just to say no politely.

In one case, a female GP was asked out for a drink by a patient as she left her surgery. She refused but the patient started pestering her via Facebook and sent her a bunch of lilies - her favourite flowers - which he had learned about through the site.

People using social networking sites like Facebook can introduce safety profiles on their account, making sure people who are only their "friends" can access their home page.

The MDU helped the GP to stop the patient's advances but also told her how to use the security and privacy settings.

Dr Emma Cuzner, MDU medico-legal adviser, has written about the issue in the latest MDU Journal: "The pitfalls posed to doctors using social networking sites by inadvertently breaching confidentiality or posting unprofessional content, such as photos, have been well documented," she said.

"But doctors may be less prepared for patients using sites like Facebook to ask them out on a date. Some doctors have told the MDU they feel it would be rude rude - [WPI] 1.
