Vinyl; content notes. SA This production contains a brilliant analysis and interpretation of a number of writers, including Edgar Allan Poe, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Herman Melville and others. Doctorow examines and speculates on the creative process of each and how it unfolded against the writer's background of time, place, and culture. How and why did Kafka write a book about "Amerika" without having visited the United States and what did it reveal about European perceptions? Not all of the creationists are literary. Doctorow explores the comedy and pathos of Harpo Marx and why he was most children's "favorite" Marx brother. He explores the creators of the atomic bomb and their horror at what they had unleashed. The listener is captivated by Doctorow's sober speculations about the novels the war in Iraq will engender, to take their place alongside the novels of Hemingway and Malraux. In each essay, Doctorow defines himself as less a scholar than a "working writer" delving into the creative process of his fellows. His narration is precise and intimate. The listener is moved by the passion he brings to literature. This is a wonderful addition to any library.
