Toronto--Toronto's Filippino community suffered another loss on August 13, 2003, when Dr. Nestor Yanga died from complications due to severe acute respiratory syndrome Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Definition

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is the first emergent and highly transmissible viral disease to appear during the twenty-first century.

 disease.

Dr. Yanga had worked at a Scarborough, ON, medical clinic where he contracted SARS from one of his patients. He was admitted to hospital on April 8 and kept on a ventilator ventilator /ven·ti·la·tor/ (ven´ti-la-tor)

 until his death.

A member of the Bukas Loob da Siyos Catholic prayer group, Dr. Yanga was well-known as a pillar pillar, freestanding columnar supporting member. It is a general term, little used as an exact architectural definition except as applied to an upright support in the medieval styles, consisting of an assemblage of juxtaposed shafts and moldings; unlike the column,  of the Filippino community, a man devoted to his family and to his patients.
