Doane Named A&B President & Chief Executive Officer; R. J. Pfeiffer Remains Board Chairman.


HONOLULU--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 1998--The Board of Directors of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. (Nasdaq:ALEX) today named W. Allen Doane president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of A&B, and appointed him to the boards of both A&B and Matson Navigation Company Matson Navigation Company, a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, is a private ocean transportation company with roots extending into the late 19th century. It is credited with introducing mass tourism to Hawaii with the opening of the Moana Hotel (now known as the Moana Surfrider Hotel) , Inc. (Matson), its ocean transportation subsidiary.

Doane will remain president and CEO, and a member of the board, of A&B-Hawaii, Inc. (ABHI), A&B's property management and development, and food products subsidiary.

R. J. Pfeiffer remains chairman of the board of A&B, Matson and ABHI. The A&B Board today expressed its gratitude to Pfeiffer for his service as president and CEO since the announcement on July 27, 1998 that John C. Couch would step aside in order to take a medical leave.

Before coming to A&B, Doane had been chief operating officer of The Shidler Group, a nationally prominent real estate investment/management firm. Prior to that, he was group vice president of IU International Corporation (former parent company of C. Brewer and Company, Limited) from 1985 to 1988. He joined C. Brewer in 1975, and held increasingly responsible management positions in both Honolulu and in Philadelphia, the corporate headquarters of IU.

Doane serves as chair of The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center.
