DoD accepts fourth Hunter Joint Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System; accepted air vehicles now number 33, another 29 to be delivered by September.SIERRA VISTA, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 1995--The Department of Defense accepted the fourth Hunter system for the Joint Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle A powered, aerial vehicle that does not carry a human operator, uses aerodynamic forces to provide vehicle lift, can fly autonomously or be piloted remotely, can be expendable or recoverable, and can carry a lethal or nonlethal payload. The system's eight air vehicles and ground equipment successfully completed all performance and reliability tests at Cochise College Airfield in Douglas, Ariz., between June 22 and June 30. "With acceptance of the remaining three systems by September, the number of Hunter air vehicles delivered will reach 62." Deliveries began April 14 with acceptance of System One -- which now is being used for training -- for the U.S. Army's D Company, 304 Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. System Two, accepted June 15, has been transferred to C Company. System Three, also accepted June 15, is undergoing environmental and electromagnetic testing at White Sands Missile Range White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), formerly known as the White Sands Proving Grounds, is a rocket range in New Mexico operated by the United States Army. The range covers an area of almost 3,200 mi² (8 287 km²), approximately three times the size of Rhode Island, making it in New Mexico and Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona, and will be handed off to the U.S. Navy for the shipboard requirement. System Four will be used for the test-analyze-fix-test program at Sierra Vista. "Hunter has been flying on a rigorous schedule," said Mason. Hunter air vehicles, which have logged more than 3,300 flight hours since 1990, including 267 flights with 687.4 hours in 1995 through June 30, are ready for Army deployment. Recent training accomplishments include: six nights of flying in June at Cochise College Airfield and Rugge-Hamilton Army Airfield for external pilot and flight line operator training; and more than 1,000 touch-and-go landings by soldiers and marines. Flight training has been augmented to include nine training simulators delivered to the National UAV Training Center at Fort Huachuca.
