Do not Cut Too Many Corners

considering small businesses who decide to save money when it comes to business card printing

Marketing is and always will be about spending money in the hopes of making even more money in return, yes, even in the budget you spend printing business cards. Now, spending more money is not always going to increase the amount of money you make, and you have to consider how you are spending every penny first. A problem many companies face is that they decide they want to make their marketing as cost effective as possible, and so they start to figure out every way they can to keep the costs down in order to maximize the profits.

In theory this is perfectly fine, and if applied appropriately will help you out quite a bit, but this can be harder to actually do in practice than it seems.

Consider the owner of a small business who decides he wants to save money when it comes to business card printing. He looks at his card and figures he can just design one himself, saving him the cost of having to pay for someone else to handle the job. Furthermore he decides that when he needs to print business cards he will get a smaller order done than he normally would. After all, what if he does not use all those cards? He will end up having too many extra and he will have wasted money on them.

Once again in theory these sounds like it could be a decent idea. He would get the savings from designing his card himself while spending money to print only the right number of cards rather than potentially printing far too many.

But when reality is brought in something like this can quickly break down. First off if he is designing the card himself, or any of his other marketing material, and he is not very experienced in design work the final product will suffer. People who spent years learning design software and different aspects of the job have a skill set you cannot always just pick up quickly.

Yes, the material he makes will have been made cheaper, but will it bring in the same number of customers it did before? The profits will start to suffer due to poorly made marketing material, making any savings on the costs meaningless.

For the printing the reality is it is cheaper to print in bulk. If you wanted to print business cards in multiple small batches you are going to end up spending more money over time than you would have if you had just gotten a single large order done all at once.

I understand the desire to save as much money as you can when it comes to making your marketing material, and there are many companies who end up spending far more than they have to on their marketing. Do not let this allow you to make poor decisions and fail to get the best marketing done that you possibly can.
