Division 4, Molding Methods & Materials, is the largest of the 11 technical divisions of AFS. Consisting of an executive committee and 12 separate committees, the division is responsible for the transfer of current technologies, procedures and trends in molding methods and materials. Over the last several years, the principal effort of the division has focused on the rewriting of the Mold & Core Test Handbook. Each committee revised that section of the book covered by its particular discipline. The definitive handbook contains 112 sand testing procedures and new sections on chemically bonded sands and refractory coatings.

Committee Responsibilities

* Committee 4A (Executive Committee) directs the activities of each of the division's committees. It consists of the division chairman, vice chairman, secretary, secretary-elect, chairmen of the individual committees and four members at large.

* Committee 4A1 (Technical Publication Monitoring) is a new permanent committee established to review all Division 4 publications. It will determine format consistency and technical accuracy, submitting any sections requiring modification back to the originating committee.

* Committee 4B (Program and Papers) is responsible for the technical program of the division at the annual Casting Congress.

* Committee 4C (Honorary Awards and Nominations), comprised of division members who have received American Foundrymen's Society awards, meets once a year to select nominees for the three AFS awards and the Divisional Silver Anniversary lecturer.

* Committee 4D (Green Sand Test) completed the nitrogen testing procedures and presented its findings during a panel discussion at the 94th Casting Congress. The committee is currently evaluating sulfur testing and the green sand micrometer. Evaluation of the need for a better definition and test for sand flowability is under consideration by the committee.

* Committee 4E (Basic Concepts) is considering developing a gage R&R computer program to be available from AF Software. The first phase of the Ohio State Surface Chemistry project shows there are agents that by various mechanisms can hinder the rebonding of reclaimed sand. The committee will present its findings on core sand dilution at this year's Casting Congress. The committee is also studying computerizing certain sand tests.

* Committee 4F (Mold Metal Interface) has extended Phase 1 of the research project at the University of Alabama titled "A Comprehensive Study of the Conditions that Contribute to Penetration-Type Defects." The committee has formed an ad-hoc committee to write "Cast-Facts" articles for modem casting and to publish a handbook on burn-in/on-type defects.

* Committee 4H (Foundry Sand Additives) is studying the effect of chemical modifiers on clay-bonded sand, the recycling of wet and dry dust collector materials into green sand systems, and oil contamination and lignite additions to foundry sand systems. The committee will present its findings on chemical modifiers at the 1991 Casting Congress.

* Committee 41 (Cured Sand) is proceeding with its study of the test casting project. The committee will publish a "Cast Facts" article on iron oxide additions to chemically cured cores.

* Committee 4J (Molding and Core Aggregate) is studying the variability of sampling and splitting samples and continuing its examination of sample reduction in conjunction with a committee from General Motors. The particle size task group and the committee will present their findings at the 1991 Casting Congress.

* Committee 4M (Green Sand Mold) has been working on an SPC project for small and medium foundries. Dimensional reproducibility studies from the '70s will be analyzed to see if further work is warranted. A subcommittee will write a handbook, Back to Basics of Molding Sands, which will include a chapter on impact or impulse molding.

* Committee 4S (Sand Reclamation and Reuse) has been organizing a sand reclamation conference, which is scheduled for March 15-16, 1991 in Novi, Michigan. Subjects and speakers are to be announced. Future projects also are being considered.
