Ditch voter plan.

I couldn't agree more with the article entitled "Assault on the Electoral College electoral college, in U.S. government, the body of electors that chooses the president and vice president. The Constitution, in Article 2, Section 1, provides: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, " (June 26) by George Detweiler, especially his exposure of the idiocy IDIOCY, med. jur.  of, not to mention the blatant unconstitutionality of, the proposed "National Popular Vote Plan" espoused by a number of political has-beens.

Seemingly periodically, schemes to elect the president directly by popular vote appear out of nowhere. Congressional hearings are held, and proponents of direct election assail as·sail

the electoral college system with vituperative remarks. The last such period was around 1969-1970, and the frenzy in the liberal press against the electoral college was almost unbelievable.

Unfortunately for the position of those pressing for direct election, no responsible case has been made for a simple direct election. Proponents are naive enough to believe that there will always be only two candidates and that fraud does not occur in presidential elections. It may be that there are certain legitimate objections to the present system, but at least, as Detweiler points out, "voter fraud, hard enough to prove and remedy when done within the boundaries of any one state, becomes almost impossible to check under the plan." Under the present system, recounts in 2000 were limited to Florida. Under any direct election system, the vote of the entire nation would have to be recounted. As Detweiler points out, the latest plan is a schizophrenic nightmare.

Much can be said for the present system in that it effectively requires the candidates to run the gamut of elections in both large and small states, both Northern and Southern states Southern States
