Disused Valleys line could be back on track.

A STUDY is to look at reopening the Hirwaun to Aberdare railway line to passengers.

Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones Ieuan Wyn Jones (born 22 May 1949) is leader of Plaid Cymru, Deputy First Minister in the Welsh Assembly Government and Member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Ynys Môn constituency. He was Member of the UK parliament for Ynys Môn constituency from 1987-2001.  made the announcement during a transport committee discussion on railway infrastructure at the Assembly.

Themovefollowsthe success of the recentlyreopenedEbbw Vale railway line which transported its millionth passenger recently - double the level expected.

One of the first to support the plan was Plaid's Parliamentary candidate for Cynon Valley Cynon Valley is an ex-mining area and near Rhondda, Wales. From 1974 to 1996 the area was one of the districts of Wales, formed from the Aberdare and Mountain Ash urban districts, and part of Neath Rural District, along with the parish of Penderyn from Brecknockshire. , Dr Dafydd Trystan Davies, who was born and brought up in Aberdare.

He said: "This would be a crucial link for Hirwaun and Aberdare and a major boost for the local economy.

"Too many parts of the Headsof theValleys areadon't have the firm public transport links that come with passenger train services.

"Obviously, there are some challenges to be faced before reopening the line but I'm very excited by the news.

"I've got memories as a boy of counting the coal wagons going past my gran's house in Maescynon; my great-uncle, Bert Collier, was the station master at Hirwaun; and my great-grandfather was a signal man on the line between Hirwaun and Aberdare." Cynon Valley AM Christine Chapman Christine Chapman (born 7 April, 1956) is a Welsh Labour politician who has been a Member of the National Assembly for Wales for Cynon Valley since 1999. She has not held senior government posts and has been described as "one of the quietest women AMs" but one whose "effectiveness  also welcomed the plans.

She said: "This is something that's been called for during my time as an AM and I was very pleased to hear this announcement.

"We really need to make sure we have good transport links in the area as it's vital for regeneration."

Mavis Choong, spokeswoman for Network Rail, said: "We welcome any aspirations to grow and expand the railway and have been in discussions with the Assembly regarding the re-opening of Aberdare-Hirwaun.

A study will need to be carried out to further evaluate the feasibility of this scheme andwe are still at the very early stage of developing this."
