A Republican, he was a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Oregon's 4th congressional district in 2004 and 2006. Both times, Feldkamp was defeated by long-term incumbent Peter DeFazio. for the Republican nomination for the 4th District seat in Congress. Nathanson is the clear choice to suceed retiring three-term Democratic incumbent Bob Ackerman in House District 13. A centrist who some mistook for a Republican moderate during her years on the nonpartisan Eugene City Council, she's a comfortable philosophical fit for her district, which encompasses north Eugene, River Road and parts of Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba. and the Whiteaker neighborhood. Nathanson says the state should spend more on public schools, community colleges and state universities. Health care is high on her priority list, and she believes the state should use its buying power Buying Power The money an investor has available to buy securities. In a margin account, the buying power is the total cash held in the brokerage account plus maximum margin available. Also referred to as "Excess Equity. to provide cheaper insurance coverage and prescription drugs to individuals and small businesses. She supports Gov. Ted Kulongoski's move to adopt California's tougher auto emissions standards, and favors his plan requiring that 25 percent of Oregon's power be generated by new sources of renewable energy by 2025. She also wants to help lead the push for cleanup of the Willamette River. On taxes, Nathanson wants to scale back the corporate kicker and increase the corporate minimum tax, and believes it's time to begin a comprehensive review of Oregon's tax system. On public safety, she's committed to establishing new drug courts and expanding existing ones across the state. Johnson's views on the issues reflect her paucity of political experience and lack of familiarity with state government. They include a curious conviction that the state can cut as much as $4,000 per pupil from its education budget. Nathanson deserves the support of House District 13 voters. |
