on the blenders and extruders now go to a small electrical cabinet on each piece of equipment, which has fiber-optic connections to the master operator panel. Distributed controls save floor space and expensive cabling and cut machine installation time in half because the machines can be pre-wired and pretested. Gloucester first used distributed I/O controls last year on its lab blown film line and is building its first multi-layer cast stretch-film line using this technology.
