Displays Technology Secures Wins for Smiths Aerospace.

Smiths Aerospace has recently secured strategic contracts in display technology. The current wins include both the 3-inch and 5-inch air transport indicators (ATI) displays designed & manufactured at Smiths Aerospace Cheltenham, UK and Florida, USA facilities.

American Airlines - 5ATIs

Smiths Aerospace has been awarded a contract from American Airlines to retrofit 128 MD-80 aircraft with 5ATI EADI / EHSI (electronic attitude direction indicator / electronic horizontal situation indicator) active matrix liquid crystal display systems. The system will be the primary flight and navigation display and will interface with the GPS navigation system, terrain awareness warning system (TAWS), weather radar and safety information. Deliveries will begin in the 2nd quarter of 2003.

Smiths Aerospace has also recently concluded delivery of 5ATIs for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in May, 2002. The displays replace the prior electro-mechanical ADI / HSI instruments. The new systems display the primary flight information and are installed on KLM's 747 aircraft for long haul routes. An STC was awarded in November 2001.

Bombardier Learjet 60 - certified integrated standby instrument system (ISIS)

The Federal Aviation Administration has granted Type Certification for the Smiths Aerospace integrated standby instrument system (ISIS) for the Bombardier Learjet 60 midsize business jet. The ISIS is now standard on the Learjet 60 and available as a retrofit installation. This win moves the ISIS firmly into the important business jet marketplace. The ISIS is developed at the company's facility in Cheltenham, UK.

About 5ATI primary flight integrated displays

Using AMLCD technology, combined with built-in analogue signal and digital data bus interfacing, Smiths has incorporated the EFIS functionality into a single 5ATI instrument. The depth of the unit is compatible with electro-mechanical ADI/HSI indicators and provides an easy EFIS upgrade for many classic aircraft; no separate symbol generator unit is needed.
