The orchestra will perform on "Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra In Concert," world premiering on Disney Channel, Aug. 7, 7 p.m. ET/PT. The event will be taped at New York City's Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center on June 30. This concert will feature 82 outstanding young musicians between the ages of 8 and 13 from across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Every year, Disney Channel sends the chosen musicians to a 10-day music camp where they will have an opportunity to be involved in sectional and private studies, full orchestra rehearsals and a wide array of recreational activities. This year, the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College Sarah Lawrence College, at Bronxville, N.Y.; primarily for women; chartered 1926, opened 1928 as Sarah Lawrence College for Women; renamed 1947. It is noted for its creative arts program.  will host the music camp from June 20-30.

For the 1998 Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, which performed at the historic Ravinia Festival in Chicago, more than 1,000 young musicians were selected to audition for the orchestra from more than 8,000 applications received from all over the country.

The search for orchestra members includes an application and audition process utilizing the talents of Young Musicians Foundation and production team of Smith-Hemion Productions.

During the live audition process, aspiring orchestra members between the ages of 8 and 13 demonstrate their mastery by performing two pieces, submitting to a verbal interview and possibly performing sight reading.

Audition participants are selected from students who submit written applications outlining their performance experience and award history as well as recommendation by a private or school music teacher. Musicians unable to audition in person submit a videotape for consideration.

Those selected for the orchestra will have the opportunity to be involved in sectional and private studies, full orchestra rehearsals and a wide array of recreational activities. In previous years, the late Henry Mancini, Branford Marsalis, Doc Severinsen and John Williams were among the renowned list of instructors who worked with the young musicians.

Last year, Tony award winning actress Bernadette Peters hosted the concert special, which also featured a special performance by the acclaimed violinist Vanessa-Mae. Previous concert locations include the world-famous Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and the historic Ravinia Festival in Chicago.

The orchestra was the youngest to ever play at both sites. Those wishing to participate in the audition process should call 800/203-8588 for an application.

Disney Channel's critically acclaimed "In Concert" series features a variety of recording artists from all genres of music, from rap, country and pop to classical and blues. Disney Channel's "In Concert" series offers viewers a new perspective on up-and-coming artists, and spotlights their lives on- and off-stage.

Each show features a specially taped live concert; documentary footage showing the artist pursuing personal and professional passions; and interviews with mentors, friends and family.

Most recently, Disney Channel taped an "In Concert" special with international pop sensations B-Witched and Five. The four ladies of B-Witched and the five heartthrobs of Five will star in their first television special, premiering March 27, 1999, 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Previously, Disney Channel teamed Shawn Colvin, Tatyana Ali and 'N Sync for "Holidays In Concert." Hosted by Shawn Colvin, "Holidays In Concert" featured a specially taped concert performance of favorite holiday music from Epcot at The Walt Disney World Noun 1. "'N Sync In Concert" was credited by RCA Records, 'N Sync's label, with significantly boosting sales of the group's self-titled album (Billboard 8/15/98).

"Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra In Concert" is a Smith-Hemion production in association with Disney Channel and Young Musicians Foundation. Multi-Emmy Award-winners Gary Smith and Dwight Hemion are executive producers of the special. Gail Purse is producer.
